The Ganges is not just a river — she is a goddess, a mother, a sacred flow of life. She begins in the Himalayas and makes her way down, eventually merging with the Bay of Bengal, becoming one with the ocean. That journey mirrors the immigrant and diasporic experience — starting in a specific, rooted place and flowing outward into something vast and borderless. As a mixed Indian American woman, my heritage began in the sacred waters of the Ganga in Varanasi, India — but my family story expanded like the ocean, embracing new shores while never forgetting where we came from. Spiritually, the Ganga's journey to the ocean symbolizes my intention (sankalpa) to carry forward the strength of my ancestors. Harbor was named for the safety I felt in returning to India for the first time and walking along the Ganges River. She is the source and also the journey - the beginning of my artistic journey as a full time artist and also my family’s story of immigrating to the US from Varanasi.
