Black Legacy: Quilts of Color

Portrait by Montinique Monroe

$100000.00

Renowned quilter Laverne Brackens embodies Black joy, artistry, excellence, and legacy. At 93, Brackens sits in her home, framed by one of her early silk quilts—a testament to her mastery and heritage. Continuing a family tradition, she was named a National Heritage Foundation fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2011, and commissioned by Michelle Obama to craft a quilt for the First Lady of South Korea. This portrait, captured for a story by journalist Dalyah Jones, honors Brackens and the enduring spirit of Black quiltmakers in East Texas.
