Black Joy: Jump On It
Capturing Black Joy with Montinique Monroe

It means so much not only to experience Black joy but also to capture it, and Black joy is my favorite thing to capture. For decades, Givens Park in East Austin has been a gathering place for Black people to convene for festivals, cookouts, car shows, and other events. I happened to walk through the park in July 2017 and captured this image of youth laughing and dancing during a Jump On It concert. Jump On It began in 1997 as a weekly Summer concert series for inner city youth. Founded by Austin's beloved musical artist Charles 'Nook Turner' Byrd, Jump On It brought popular artists to spaces throughout East Austin, allowing youth to engage in safe summer fun. Today, in addition to the concert series, Jump On It provides healthcare and career resources, financial literacy education, and multiple outreach programs for both youth and young adults.
